Emille de Blanche
Stockholm, SE

In her work, de Blanche draws on a personal archive of diverse environments where fragmented memories of places and details form the basis of her work in the studio. Her archive consists of alternative views of the city, of urban interaction and exploration of public space. The use of industrial materials is central to the process and de Blanche sees it as a direct reflection of the public environment, emphasising chance and anti-form as important factors in her practice.

Emille de Blanche’s abstract sculptures explore the individual’s relationship with the environment; often touching on themes such as society’s collective identity, the homogenised urban landscape, privatised spaces and the commercialisation of public space. She often works with the non-places of society, focusing on the structures that shape the environment but often go unnoticed. De Blanche’s work is based on the relationship between the private and the public and on mental memories and personal patterns of movement in the public space. Focusing on non-place and architectural spaces, de Blanche explores how these places influence human behaviour in public space and how this is linked to our memories and mental images of the city.
